The Alliance for Intellectual Property is pleased to announce and welcome its new member, the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS). â€‹â€‹ALCS is a not-for-profit organisation started by writers for the benefit of all types of writers. Owned by its members, ALCS collects money due for secondary uses of writers’ work.

It is designed to support authors and their creativity; ensure they receive fair payment and see their rights are respected. It promotes and teaches the principles of copyright and campaigns for a fair deal. It represents over 120,000 members, and since 1977 has paid over £700million to writers. www.alcs.co.uk

As new challenges and opportunities arise, the Alliance for IP and ALCS share a collective interest in protecting and promoting IP rights to ensure writers can continue to contribute to a flourishing creative economy all whilst knowing their IP is protected.

Commenting on the new membership Dan Guthrie, Director General at the Alliance for IP, commented:

"We are delighted that ALCS have joined the Alliance and it’s great to have another voice of the creator community around the table. Writers play a vital role educationally, culturally and economically so it’s important that we protect their intellectual property rights so that contribution can continue.  We look forward to being part of that effort in the months and years to come.”

Barbara Hayes, CEO of the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society, commented:

“Our vibrant creative industries and our rich cultural heritage are all underpinned by intellectual property rights. Indeed, the UK is one of only three countries in the world to be a net exporter of intellectual property. Despite this, IP rights risk being undermined from the misuse of artificial intelligence and new digital platforms. It is vitally important that we work with our partners to ensure IP rights remain valued and respected, and so we are delighted to join the Alliance for Intellectual Property and look forward to working with our new colleagues.”

About the Alliance for Intellectual Property

The Alliance for Intellectual Property is a unique association of 23 organisations representing IP-rich businesses and creators – sectors that continue to grow and outperform the wider economy.

Our members include representatives of the audio-visual, music, toy and games, sports rights, branded manufactured goods, publishing, retailing, image, art and design sectors.

We share a collective interest in ensuring that Intellectual Property (IP) rights, which deliver such significant benefits to so many individuals across the UK, are recognised by policymakers for the value they deliver, and that a legislative regime exists that enables this value and contribution to be fully realised.
