The News Media Association joins the Alliance for Intellectual Property in membership
14th August 2023
The Alliance for Intellectual Property is pleased to announce and welcome its new member, the News Media Association (the “NMA”).

The NMA is the voice of UK local, regional and national news media titles in all their print and digital forms - a £4 billion sector read by more than 47 million adults every month in print and online.
The NMA exists to promote the interests of news media publishers to government, regulatory authorities, industry bodies and other organisations whose work affects the industry.

As new challenges and opportunities arise, the Alliance for IP and NMA share a collective interest in protecting and promoting IP rights to ensure IP-rich businesses and creators can continue to contribute to a flourishing creative economy all whilst knowing their IP is protected.

Commenting on the new membership Dan Guthrie, Director General at the Alliance for IP, commented:
“We are delighted to be welcoming the News Media Association (NMA), and a new sector, into membership. The news media is a vital part of our social, democratic and economic fabric and just like so many other parts of the economy, can only function with an intellectual property framework that promotes and protects innovation.
There are huge opportunities but also challenges ahead and we look forward to working with the team at the NMA in facing those. NMA join Publishing Licensing Services (PLS) and PRS for Music who have also joined this year and I am pleased that they have all shown their confidence in our work by becoming members.”
Owen Meredith, CEO of the News Media Association, commented:
“News publishers require robust IP rights to maintain and grow their investment in the trusted journalism which underpins democratic engagement in our society. Protecting IP rights is especially important now as governments around the world consider how to regulate AI and new technologies.

We are pleased to join the Alliance for Intellectual Property and look forward to working with colleagues from a broad range of businesses to make the case for a strong creative economy based on the protection and promotion of IP rights.”
